It's been said that a good coach makes his players better players, and  a great coach makes his players better people.

Losers give it their best, but winners succeed. That's what all coaches strive for. While winning isn't everything, too much losing isn't very rewarding either. A good coach has to understand a player's weaknesses and strengths. Good coaches understand and motivate their players. That motivation doesn't always come through positive means; sometimes it takes some negativity to understand the lesson.

Coaches who are realistic and honest about what a player can do even when it's hard are the kinds of coaches you look up to. Every person is an individual and should be treated as such.

At the youth level FUNdamentals should come first. You need the fundamental skills to understand & execute team concepts. Your new HS coach won't care how your kids youth team did, however the HS coach will care about fundamental skills, attitude, work ethic and hopefully academics. A kid with those qualities will be ready to fit into the HS program and have the tools to run the team plays the coach wants.

I always think a coach that instills a good team concept will be successful.

Good coaches teach fundamentals, team concept, and develop young players.
