I am so so so tired of coaches who intentionally play very weak schedules every season. It seems to be happening more and more as the season pass. I know that the C.I.F. Southern Section requires at least 10 or 11 victories to qualify for the playoffs but it'g getting ridiculous, now.
Teams are intentionally scheduling non-league games against first year schools, small schools, and/or purposely playing in very weak tournament fields. Then you compare the W-L records of those teams with high school teams that play a "normal" schedule of other teams and tournaments. It's very misleading! Have we become so concerned with winning at all costs that we give our young people a false sense of how good they are? Step up and play someone your equal, or at least a little better than you. As a high school coach and athlete you should want to play against the best. What possible benefit do you get (other than your fragile ego getting stroked) from beating up on some team that obviously can't defend itself "in the dark with a flashlight?" As a coach I wouldn't even feel good about it reviewing the video. Thoughts... In the late rounds of a holiday tournament or in the playoffs those teams who have an inflated record find out just how good they really ARE NOT. |
